Overview

As a result of your readings, you can now recognize that there are countless drivers that shape social change. From social media communication and censorship in China, to the election of an LGBTQ+ president in Chile, or even a local school organizing a campaign to stop plastic water bottle usage in schools-social change occurs in large and small ways every day. For this project, you will reflect on your own value system and consider what social issue is most important to you.

Directions

For this project, you will draft an article for publication in a local magazine, professional organization newsletter, or online forum. For this article, you will write about a social issue of personal significance to you. Your article will state your position, explain the impact of that issue on society, and examine that issue from varying perspectives. You will support your article with a minimum of four sources from the Shapiro Library.

Your article should include the following criteria:

Introduction

Describe a social issue that is important to you.
Explain reasons why this social issue occurs.

Background

Describe how similar historical events influence how you understand the social issue today.
Describe how similar historical events can influence how society understands the social issue today.
Describe the ways that individuals are affected by this social issue.
Describe the ways that society is affected by this social issue.

Theory

Identify at least two different social science disciplines that are relevant to your social issue.
Explain why these different social science disciplines are relevant to your social issue.
Identify the social theory that explains how this social issue has developed.
Explain why this social theory is relevant to your social issue.

Ethical Conclusions

Describe which ethical perspectives should be considered when formulating your position on this social issue.
Explain the ethical basis for your belief about this issue.
