As medical professionals, we are highly skilled in treating illnesses but frequently need to work on treating individuals. Rather than the patient, the particular physical condition has received most of our attention. The relationship between psychological well-being and physical health and illness has received little investigation (Levine et al., 2021).
To provide the medical community with an overview of the current understanding of the connection between psychological well-being and cardiovascular health and disease, the American Heart Association commissioned this scientific statement. It also offers straightforward recommendations for screening patients who already have or are at risk for cardiovascular disease to enhance their psychological well-being. The survey found that an overwhelming body of evidence indicates that interventions aimed at enhancing psychological well-being may positively affect cardiovascular health. Strong evidence links psychological well-being to biological processes and behaviors that cause and contribute to cardiovascular disease (CVD) (Levine et al., 2021). Adverse psychological health encompasses depression, chronic stress, anxiety, anger, pessimism, and dissatisfaction with one's current life. Positive psychological health is also multifaceted and may be characterized by optimism, purpose, gratitude, resilience, positive affect (i.e., positive emotion), and happiness. (Levine et.al, 2021).
The profession's dual emphasis on societal and individual well-being in a social setting is a historical and distinctive aspect of social work. An awareness of the environmental factors that cause, contribute to, and resolve life's challenges is essential to social work (NASW, 2022). Social workers frequently work for organizations that do not prioritize social work ethics and values in interdisciplinary teams.
In addition to these difficulties, social workers and other medical professionals have been assisting patients in navigating the recent and swift changes in healthcare. They frequently answer inquiries from patients regarding insurance coverage, county assistance, prescription costs, and availability of mental health and drug abuse services. Social workers have become leaders in adaptive practices that uphold quality and access while operating within the confines of the current healthcare system, owing to the nature of their role and the growing complexity of healthcare services, especially since the implementation of the Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA) (Donnelly, 2019).
Elaborate on the relationships between the mental and physical illnesses described above.
Provide a constructive critique of the course of physical illness influenced by the mental illness.
