A 75-year old man was taken to the hospital following an episode of syncope (fainting). His medical records indicated he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was 52. The chemical examination gave the following results: Specific gravity: 1.012 pH: 5.0 Blood: Moderate Protein: 4+ (High) Leukocytes: Negative Nitrites: Negative Glucose: 250 mg/dL Ketones: 2+ (Moderate) Bilirubin: Negative Urobilinogen: 0.2 md/dL

1. What substance accounts for the white foam seen in the urine? Is this significant, why or why not? The doctor also ordered a complete chemistry panel. The results indicated the patient was dehydrated, had a decreased eGFR, and a high blood glucose level at 400 mg/dL.
