Question

Researchers have documented a relationship between the GINI Coefficient, which is a measure of inequality and crime. That is, as the GINI Coefficient increases (indicating more inequality) crime also tends to increase. To expand the research on the intersection of inequality and crime, researchers examined the relationship between the GINI Index and punishment. To the surprise of researchers, the results of their study indicate that a one decile increase of the Gini coefficient is associated with a 4 percent decrease in the type of punishment similar situated defendants receive. That is, for every incremental increase in inequality, sentences (i.e. punishment) tended to decrease for similarly situated defendants. What is a potential intervening variable?
