Persico and colleagues conducted a study examining the relationship between tiredness and cognitive performance in a sample of emergency physicians. With the relationship between cognitive error and tiredness now being accepted, they sought to evaluate cognitive performance after a 14 hour night shift and after a work shift of 24 hours in comparison to tests performed after a typical night at home. Physician cognitive abilities (processing speed, working memory capacity, perceptual reasoning, and cognitive flexibility - as measured by the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test) were the primary outcome measures for the study.
