The research design chosen to study the relationship between coffee consumption and cancer risk has several notable weaknesses. Firstly, the study's operational definitions could be misleading. The term "coffee consumption" needs to be defined more precisely. Are they considering the quantity, type, or preparation method of coffee consumed? Without a clear and specific operational definition, it becomes challenging to draw meaningful conclusions. Additionally, there might be inadequate controls in place to account for confounding variables such as smoking, diet, or genetics, which could also influence cancer risk. While the research design may provide valuable insights into associations, it struggles to establish a statistically significant causal relationship between coffee consumption and cancer. Establishing the cause requires experimental designs, and this study appears more observational. The research design's ability to definitively prove that "coffee causes cancer" is questionable. Overall, a more refined and controlled approach would be necessary to draw stronger conclusions on this topic.
