Discussion: Community Correlations

In this discussion, I will focus on how High blood pressure and high cholesterol correlate with Heart Failure.

A study conducted by Haider and others showed how high blood pressure related to an increased risk of Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). The systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, heart rate, and other factors were studied on a sample of 894 men and 1146 women with a mean age of 60 and a range of 50 to 79 for 24 years. The results showed that one standard deviation of 20mmHg in systolic pressure could lead to a 56% increased risk of CHF. The systolic pressure had more potential to cause risk than diastolic pressure. This study showed a positive correlation where the higher the systolic pressure, the greater the risk was for CHF.

Another study looked at the relationship between cholesterol levels and heart failure. The researchers realized that lower Total Cholesterol (TC) levels put patients at higher risk for mortality when diagnosed with heart failure, and more specifically, valvular heart disease (VHD). This study had a negative correlation where the low Total Cholesterol levels had a high chance of mortality when viewing a scatter plot graph. This study consisted of 6235 participants which 393 persons died, and 265 persons were rehospitalized within two years. The results of this test concluded that with a decrease of just 1 mmol/L the risk of hospitalization or mortality was at a 1.19-fold, 95% C.I. 1.09 to 1.30, p <0.001) (Feng et al. 2023).
