Assigned two case studies for individual analysis (both cases are included in the Course Pack available from Harvard Business Publishing)
1. "Innovation and Renovation: The Nespresso Story"
2. "Reinventing Best Buy"
Each of these relatively complex cases deals with different aspects of corporate strategy. Both of the companies discussed are large, publicly-traded firms, and information about them is readily available from a variety of sources.
For the specific assignments in this course, expect the following:
A well-structured, well-reasoned and well-edited (spell-checked) document of no more than 6 printed pages, single-spaced, containing the following elements:
1. Student identification (name and number)
2. Executive Summary (1 paragraph)
3. Table of Contents
4. Synopsis of case study (1/2 page)
5. List of case-specific questions (provided below), followed by your justified answer to each question.
6. Conclusions and recommendations (1/2 page)
7. List of References as appropriate.
Each case study analysis will be evaluated on the basis of the following 4 criteria:
1. Evidence of thoughtful and complete analysis of the case
2. Editorial quality of written document (professional appearance, careful editing, absence of spelling and grammatical errors, proper referencing).
3. Completeness and relevance of answers given to questions.
4. Strength of conclusions and recommendations.
Reinventing Best Buy - Case Study Questions
1. What were the original sources of Best Buy's competitive advantage?
2. Use Porter's "5 forces" model to analyze the attractiveness of the consumer electronics business. How has this attractiveness evolved over the past few years? Do a SWOT analysis of Best Buy.
3. Which stage of the business lifecycle has Best Buy reached? Which business- and functional-level strategies are most appropriate for Best Buy at this time?
4. Does Best Buy's corporate structure contribute to, or hinder, its competitiveness?
5. Analyze Best Buy's use of corporate strategies to remain competitive.
6. How have Best Buy's business-level strategies evolved? Are they still appropriate?
7. If you were an outside consultant given a mandate to make recommendations about strategy and structure to Best Buy, what would you recommend and why?
Note - Only case study 7 questions need to be answered. Please, read the case study carefully to answer all the questions properly. Need 1600 words content + title page + references.
