Greg Wilson, regional manager of a chain of clothing stores, made a point of telling store managers that all cash on hand must be deposited in the nearest bank vault before the store was closed each night. He emphasized his point by saying, "The company doesn't want to risk a burglary just because you leave cash lying around." Most managers found this order reasonable and easy to comply with. Other managers, whose stores are located either inner-city districts considered unsafe at night and did not always follow the regional manager's instructions. As might have been expected, an inner-city store was burglarized one night and more than $2,000 in cash removed. The store manager's rationale was the store was covered by insurance and my life isn't worth risking over this unwritten policy. Wilson confronted the store manager involved and fired him on the spot. The store manager does not take the firing well and has threatened to sue to company.
