Case Study : Community Hospital NICU

As the Vice President of Nursing Services, you have been asked by the CEO of the hospital to provide a proposal to the hospital's Board of Directors regarding establishment of a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The150-bed community hospital currently averages 875 delivers per year (by physician or certified nurse midwife). Babies requiring neonatal care are currently transferred to one of three facilities depending on the level of care needed. The two more acute NICU are 1.5 to 2.5 hours away from the local hospital (one in-state and one is out-of-state). On average 5 babies are transferred per month to a NICU. The request for the proposal was made by the Chair of the Board of Directors, whose grandchild had to be transferred to a NICU following birth at 28 weeks gestation.

What factors would need to be considered regarding this proposal?
