Creating an Essay Outline
Below is a basic outline structure for a clear, well-organized and well-supported essay. This is a very general outline. Depending on the type of essay you are writing, this format may change. For example, you may be writing an essay where you include more than 3 quotes in a paragraph or more than 2 sentences of analysis per quote. Again, this is just a place to start and a way to organize your ideas.
A. Introduction: an introduction that sets up your argument about the article. How will you introduce your argument?
1. Write Your Thesis Here (1-2 sentences at the end of your introduction): Your thesis is a major claim that serves as the foundation for your argument. Make sure your thesis responds to the prompt, reflects your position on the issue and includes specific reason(s). Remember you are not required to have 3 points in your thesis; you may have more than 3 or fewer than 3.
B. Write Your Topic Sentence Here (1st main point or sub claim): A topic sentence is a sentence in your own words that explains the main idea of this paragraph. The order of your ideas in your thesis should be in the same order of all your topic sentences.
1. Include a Quote/Evidence Here- Make sure to frame quotes; do not drop them in your essay without an explanation of where they came from or who said them. Always cite paraphrases and quotes using proper MLA citation.
2. Include Analysis Here - Analysis is the part of your paragraphs where you explain thoroughly, clearly and directly why the evidence you've presented in your quote is important, how it helps support your argument and how it connects to your thesis.
3. Include Analysis Here - You should have at least 2 sentences of analysis per quote - you may have more.
4. Include Another Quote/Evidence Here (if necessary) - Although you are required to include 1 quote per paragraph, you can include two quotes if your paragraph is underdeveloped, your main point needs more explanation or the main point of this paragraph is particularly important or strong.
5. Include Analysis Here
6. Include Analysis Here
7. Add a Transitional Sentence Here - This sentence concludes the idea in this paragraph and mentions the idea in the following paragraph. Use words like "furthermore", "however" or "also" depending on what your next point is. You can also include a transition at the beginning of your next topic sentence for the next paragraph.
C. Write Your Topic Sentence Here (2nd main point or sub claim)
1. Include a Quote/Evidence Here
2. Include Analysis Here
3. Include Analysis Here
4. Include a Quote/Evidence Here
5. Include Analysis Here
6. Include Analysis Here
7. Add a Transitional Sentence Here
You will have more than 2 body paragraphs for your essays; however, to save space and cut redundancy, I've only represented 2 body paragraphs here.
D. Conclusion: Including a restatement of thesis and explain what message you'd like your reader to take away from your argument.
