Reflection Paper: Career Genogram
A genogram is a graphic representation of a family tree that displays detailed data on relationships among individuals. It goes beyond a traditional family tree by allowing you to document and analyze other factors such as jobs/career, psychological patterns, etc. that factors that influence relationships.
Instructions
Create a culture and career genogram of your family and write a reflection on how your family careers and stories about the world of work has impacted you.
Career Genogram: Document as many generations as you can, but ideally 2-3 generations (your generation, parent generation, and grandparent generation). You do not have to ask family members about any information you don’t know, but please do address this in your reflection. The amount and detail that family talks about jobs/careers or don’t talk about job/careers is part of your story to reflect on. Talking with family to collect more information is acceptable as well.
Reflection Paper: Length and style of paper is up to you. In your reflection, please summarize any patterns in jobs/career you see, including career fields, type of jobs, length of time in career field and/or at company, and schooling required for jobs, if applicable. Additionally, reflect on and write about messages/stories/values shared with you by your family and society regarding the following:
Cultural Norms:
- Beliefs about it means to be successful in life, in a career
- Beliefs about how work/career are connected to identity
- Belief of the value of education and career pursuits
Career Aspirations
- Availability of role models like oneself
- Stereotypes about one’s cultural group(s)
- Perceptions of barriers or support for career areas
- Vocational expectations for oneself
Societal Factors
- Quality of educational experiences
- Types of privilege/experiences with discrimination
- Access to development of skills and development of self-efficacy beliefs
