Communicating Sustainability
Task description: Sometimes, an example of a potential solution to a challenge can be found elsewhere to illustrate solutions and possibilities. In this task, you need to communicate how a sustainability challenge could be addressed by drawing on evidence of a successful solution which has been applied to a similar problem elsewhere. In other words, show that a solution to a similar problem has been shown to work somewhere else!
Part A: Solution Report
Firstly, choose a local sustainability challenge. You are encouraged to use the challenge from your previous assignment (All), but you can choose another challenge. Either way, make sure your challenge is not too broad and that you can identify the specific context and stakeholders involved in your sustainability challenge (see instructions for AT1).
Having identified a challenge, research possible solutions from elsewhere using media reports, expert opinion, and/or scholarly research. Your solution needs to be evidence-based and demonstrable. In other words, this solution has been shown to work, rather than being hypothesised.
Communicate your proposed solution to one or more of the stakeholders identified in your local challenge in a "solution report".
Make sure to:
• Contextualise me solution by describing the problem it seeks to solve or address;
• Explain how this solution works and why it is effective;
• Use 1-4 images (such as photographs, graphs or drawings) to communicate how the solution functions and/or demonstrate its successful application; and,
• Conclude by reflecting realistically on the limitations of applying this solution to your local challenge, which might include discussing the quality of available evidence, the differences between the contexts of the two scenarios, and/or the distribution of benefits across community stakeholders and the environment.
Format for your solutions report. The aim of the solution report is to clearly communicate a solution you have identified using one of the following:
An open letter/opinion piece or long form journalism (feature article) for a local news site, newspaper or magazine. This form requires you use journalistic conventions (see Module 4), including a strong introduction (lede) and quotes (using attribution, but no intext referencing):
or.
A letter to a stakeholder or submission to an authority (such as the local council) using Harvard Referencing to support cited research.
Either option requires a least one image as evidence of the solution in use - ie visual evidence the solution works. Other images (up to four total) can be used to illustrate how a solution works (such as a diagram for example), but it is important to find an image of the successful application of your chosen example of a solution.
Part B: Reflection
Write a 500-word reflection on your communication practice that explains how you designed your solution report to engage stakeholders by incorporating concepts and readings from the unit into your design.
Parts A and B can be submitted either as one file or as separate files.
If you do interview someone for your assignment, make sure they sign a consent form and attach it to your assignment.
Referencing
• Do ensure that your reflection discusses (and references) any material you cite or attribute in your solution report (Part A).
• All sources of information in Part B needs to be referenced using Harvard Referencing. Check out the University Library's Guide to Harvard Referencing.
