Assignment - Reflection on William James's book "Talks to Teachers on Psychology."
As part of the assessment of the core standards, students will read and reflect upon William James's book Talks to Teachers on Psychology (James, 1899) After reading the book, submit a short (2-3 page) written report on the book and its place in modern education. The questions to be answered in the report are as follows:
1. What elements of the book that are relevant to today's classroom?
2. Which elements of James's book have you seen implemented in your fieldwork? For non-secondary education students, reflect on your own high school and college experiences.
3. What elements are irrelevant to the modern classroom? Do these elements seem to have been disproved by research, or have they simply fallen out of style? Explain.
4. James's psychological works have been viewed by many theorists as a precursor to their own work. Discuss two theories covered in class that James's work seems to predict (give specific examples).
5. Reflection questions: What did I learn about the act of teaching? What did I learn about learners and the learning process? What are the implications of my learning (responses 1 and 2) for my future work as a teacher candidate?
