Reflection on onboarding and training reflection.
Onboarding aka orientation is a long-term, continuous socialization process bringing and socializing employees into the workplace. Training is a short-term, discrete effort to help employees gain the required KSAOs and/or competencies to perform well in their position; training is based on a needs assessment (Dessler & Chhinzer textbook, 2020, p. 182).
1. Imagine you have just started your dream job. Knowing what you know now about training and onboarding, what would your ideal onboarding experience be? What would you expect to learn in your first week? Your first month? Your first year?
2. How would you want to be socialized and treated to feel like an insider instead of an outsider?
3. In this dream job, list 1 - 2 training activities that you would participate in (e.g., a specific skill workshop).
a) Provide details about the training such as who will provide the training (e.g., the supervisor, coworker, HR), where it will take place (e.g., classroom, on the job), and frequency (e.g., one time, ongoing).
b) Be sure that the training recommendations reflect the most important/critical KSAOs and competencies required in the position based on a thorough job analysis.
Identify and explain the link between the training and the KSAOs and competencies being honed and developed and that are required for the job.
i. Identify and explain the link between how the training activities will help the organization meet its strategic objectives.
ii. Have you ever worked in an organization that hasn't provided you with sufficient onboarding or training? Alternatively, this could be a life or school experience such as a course or test where you were not provided with sufficient information to submit a task or you were not welcomed or made to feel a part of a group. What happened? Were there any repercussions? What recommendations would you make to the organization?
