Film - "The Help"
Consider doing a quick review on the following topics: form, style, motif, Narrative and Genre, and Mis-en-Scene (all aspects of it). Give examples from each category you see as you go to get samples at hand
Formatting tips.
- Introductory paragraph:
Include the title of the film chosen for this review, a thesis (let us know what you will be analyzing) and you can include some film basics like the style or time period, and directors or designers (if you are going to be discussing their work or choices) of the film as well.
- Body paragraph 1: Form, Style, and Motif
Give specific examples of how each of these was used in the film, what style(s) was the film, does the director have a specific style they typically tend to, and did this film stick with that? What motifs did you see or hear used in the film, give specific examples from the film and talk about their significance and how they tie back into style and theme.
- Body paragraph 2: Narrative and Genre
Discuss what genre the film is and how you know this is the film's genre. (What are the characteristics of this genre and specific examples of where you saw this in the film.) How did the narrative structure of the film work, please use direct examples from the film to show how this worked and connect them back to specific concepts discussed in the chapter.
- Body paragraph 3: Mise-en-Scene
Discuss how mise en scene was used in this film. Sets, props, costumes, camera angles, lighting, CGI or special effects, etc. And then talk about the effect they had on the style and form. Why were they used and their overall effect on the film, especially when used together to create specific moods, feelings, environments etc. Use specific moments and examples from the film to support your analysis.
- Body paragraph 4: Camera Analysis
Discuss the camera placement, camera movement, focus and depth, stock, exposure, and effects. Give examples from the film.
- Body paragraph 5: Commercial and industrial contexts
Discuss the business of the film, distribution, and marketing, exhibition. Give examples from the film.
- Body paragraph 6: Analyze Editing
Discuss the elements of editing, continuity editing, and alternative editing styles. Give examples from the film.
- Body paragraph 7: Analyze the Historical Content
Discuss the era of Hollywood filmmaking was the film made. Who produced the film, and what makes this producer an "independent"? Is the film part of a larger movement? How do its style and story reflect that movement? Give examples from the film.
- Body paragraph 8: Analyze Sound
Discuss the sound and image, the voice track, the music, the sound effects, sound editing, and mixing. Give examples from the film.
Conclusion:
How did all of these elements tie together in the film and what effect did they have? This is the only paragraph where you should include your opinion the other paragraphs should all be objective facts and analyses from your observation. In the final paragraph, you may also include how effective you felt these elements worked to tell the story in the film. Once that has been done, you may also include what you thought about the film in general.
