Reflection on Communication
Questions:
Consider how much time in a work/school day you dedicate to communication and all the different types of communication in which you engage. We use communication to transmit information, give direction, explain, correct, encourage, provide feedback, and much more. Even with the diversity of tools and applications available, at its core, communication remains a process between people and that brings challenges. Think about your own experiences at work, school and in life regarding communication. Answer the following questions about your own feelings and experiences.
1. Who is the best communicator you know? Why do you consider that person to be so?
2. Who makes you the most defensive when you talk with that person? What does the person do that makes you so defensive or uncomfortable?
3. With whom are you the most comfortable and non-defensive in conversation? What does the person do that makes you so comfortable or non-defensive?
4. What nonverbal behaviors do you find most helpful in others when you are attempting to talk with them? When you try to listen to them?
5. What methods have you found most helpful in overcoming barriers to communication that are physical? Status based? Cultural? Linguistic?
