Critical reflection on a filmed simulation of a real life communication scenario between a patient and nurse.
However, in this instance, you will be reflecting on your reactions to and observations of a filmed interaction between a nurse and patient and identifying the implications for the person, patient care and nursing practice.
The patient, Helen, has complex communication needs and has just been admitted to hospital; the nurse, Emma, has responsibility for completing the admission assessment, caring for Helen and handing over relevant information to the clinical team. Work should be done using havard referencing format.
Learning outcome 1: Application of knowledge gained from theory (psychology, sociology and communications) and wider evidence-base to clinical practice
Learning outcome 2: Ability to recognise and challenge oppressive practice
Learning outcome 3: Critically appraise the value and application of a range of communication skills and tools available to health workers
Learning outcome 4: Awareness and critical appreciation of appropriate communication methods for meeting a range of clients and carers needs. (For example, dementia, learning disability, sensory impairment.)
Learning outcome 5: Identification of co-operative measures to resolve potential communication problems related to sensitive, ethical or organisational issues
Learning outcome 6: Application of knowledge of evidence-based practice in documenting care
Overview of assignment: an evidence-based, critical reflection
For this assignment you are required to write an evidence-based, critical reflection on a communication scenario based on Helen's lived experiences as a patient. Helen has cerebral palsy and complex communication needs and in this scenario, Helen has just been admitted to hospital after sustaining an injury at home. Her nurse, Emma, has recently started her shift and is meeting Helen for the first time. She is required to complete Helen's admission assessment, identify and plan Helen's care needs with Helen, and handover key information to the multidisciplinary team using the iSBAR structure
When writing the reflection you will focus on the perspective of either the patient or the nurse, and critique and explain up to a maximum of 3 of the reactions you recorded when viewing the film from that person's perspective (i.e. you put yourself in the patient's (Helen's) or nurse's (Emma's) shoes when you watched the film). Your reflection should demonstrate how knowledge gained from this unit and wider reading has been applied to your critical analysis of 2-3 of your responses, and explain how these relate to patient care and, or, nursing practice, including your own practice using the unit ILOs as a guide. Please note: A photograph or scanned copy of any comments and thoughts written down when you viewed the film from the perspective of 1) the patient, and 2) the nurse must be submitted with your assignment.
Assignment brief for critical reflection:
Select ONE person's experience to focus on in the reflection
1. Helen, the patient
2. Emma, the nurse
To prepare for the written reflection you are required to put yourself in the shoes of either Helen, the patient, OR Emma, the nurse, when watching the film 'Hospital Admission; Hi Helen' (see Day 5 materials) and to imagine how you might feel in their situation. While you watch the film write down any thoughts, feelings and, or, issues that come to mind, firstly from the perspective of Helen, and then Emma. Your responses about each person should be recorded separately; Thoughts, feelings and issues record sheets for Helen's Story are available for handwritten responses but you may wish to use your own paper if you do not have access to a printer. (Please click on coloured text to access the materials and record sheets)
You may view the film as many times as you wish.
After watching the film, and recording your reactions, choose to focus on either Helen's or Emma's experience.
Using a reflective framework of your choice, write a 1,500 word evidence-based, critical reflection on the communication and interpersonal skills observed in the simulated communication scenario. Select up to a maximum of 3 of the key points you identified to critique and explain the potential impact of what you observed on the person, patient care and, or, nursing practice, using the unit ILOs as the guide. You do not need to describe the reflective model you are using but are required to reference this.
Drawing on theoretical learning from this unit and the wider evidence-base, your critical reflection should consider if the communication and interactions you observed promoted the building of a therapeutic relationship; accurate, evidence-based documentation; safe, effective person-centred care and anti-oppressive practice in accordance with unit ILOs 1-6 (the ILOs can be referred to generally rather than discussed separately in your reflection). You are required to conclude your reflection by briefly explaining how you intend to apply any learning you have gained through this unit and the critical reflection to your ongoing development and future nursing practice.
When submitting the assignment please also include a scanned copy or photograph of any words or comments you wrote down while watching the film Hospital Admission: 'Hi! Helen'. Please also make clear which person your responses relate to i.e. either Helen or Emma.
