Question: Recall that, in all but one state, the at-will doctrine operates as the "default rule" in the employment context-that is, in the absence of an agreement to the contrary, the relationship between the employee and employer is at will. Default rules ordinarily are designed 1) to reflect the likely expectations of the parties and/or 2) to further one or more social policies.
