Case: Imagine your an educator taking 10 preschool aged children to a garden for an educational excursion (Please see location below for it's characteristics.) You have prepared everything starting from the clothes they need to wear (excursion expected date is Spring season in Canada), safety considerations like having a pre-tour to the venue to check the traffic safety and general safety.
Please help me to:
Question 1. Reflect on your thoughts on excursions with preschool children.
2. Reflect on the amount of preparation needed, including all the safety considerations required.
3. Reflect on your own feelings about taking the children on excursions as an educator, leading the group.
Possible Excursion Location: Regina Floral Conservatory
Regina Floral Conservatory is a beautiful tropical garden located not too far from Downtown Regina. It is not just the location is perfect but the setting is ideal for kids. The garden provides learning program from pre-schooler age up to grade eight, which follows Science curriculum. ( (Regina Floral Conservatory, n.d.) The garden is not too large, making it ideal for educational excursions where educators can keep an eye on children within the range of their vision. Additionally, it is packed with beautiful plants and flowers from all over the tropics, which is highly appealing to the eyes of young children because to the wide variety of colourful blooms present, and which may pique their interest since not all of the plants there are native to Canada. Different stations are available also for the kids which include a soil table, sandbox, water table, art experiences, play dough, books, blocks, and nature themed materials. Children also plant a cutting to take home at each visit. (Regina Floral Conservatory, n.d.) Furthermore, there is a gazebo where educator can lead extra games and activities for the children.
We've already established that the conservatory is a great place to visit, with many species of plants that aren't normally seen in Canada. A newfound appreciation for flora may inspire children to expand their experiences beyond the typical Canadian flora. They may not have imagined that tropical plants could thrive in Canada. They can check that off their list and start growing tropical plants in their own yard during the summer season. There is a program at Regina Floral Conservatory called Lil Gardeners' Club for kids under the age of five, and it's a great way for families to spend quality time together while giving the kids a taste of nature and learning new skills.
