Question: This first reflection asks you to examine the personal strengths and challenges you bring to the role of STEM instructional leader. Nesbit (2012) proposes that leaders need to engage in a continual process of self-assessment as part of their ongoing learning and development. His self-directed leadership-development (SDLD) framework (below) centers on a cyclical process of developing self-understanding, based on both self-awareness and feedback from others, through goal-directed self-change and self-regulation. To facilitate your SDLD process, this assignment asks you to (a) consider your beliefs about STEM teaching and learning, (b) solicit and process feedback from co-workers/peers/colleagues, and (c) reflect on your motivation for becoming a STEM instructional leader in your context.

Complete the STEM Teaching and Learning Beliefs Survey by indicating your level of agreement with each statement. Include your completed survey as an appendix in your reflection submission. Then, reflect on the following questions:
Which of these beliefs do you feel you share with most of the educators with whom you work?
Which of these beliefs do you feel are different from those of other educators with whom your work?
Which of these beliefs do you feel you would want to focus on within your professional context to help promote equitable STEM teaching and learning access?
Solicit feedback from at least two individuals with whom you work. These individuals can be co-workers, peers, colleagues, and/or classmates. Ask them to share with you what they see as your strengths and challenges related to becoming an effective STEM instructional leader.
Summarize their feedback.
Then, make connections to Nesbit's (2012) SDLD framework to discuss:
What you see as a gap between your current performance and your needed/desired performance as a STEM instructional leader?
How this feedback connects to and differs from your own self-awareness?
Finally, reflect on your own motivation for becoming a STEM instructional leader by answering these three reflective questions:
Who are you as a STEM educator?
Why are you becoming a STEM instructional leader?
Based on your reflections in Steps 1 and 2 above, how do you hope this course will help you develop as an instructional leader?
