TASK 1: Concepts of Literacy 2020
Establishing the concepts and your personal expectations of literacy and learning.
LO1 Understand and review personal and professional concepts of language and literacy; and
LO2 Use your literacy skills to communicate effectively in a clearly structured response.
The purpose of this task is to ensure you have a grasp of the main concepts and to introduce you to the content of this unit. It is not necessary to use detailed references. We are interested in your reflections, your literacy skills, your ability to interpret information, and your understanding of important material.
Your checklist for completion of Task 1: 800 words to submit
(Remember - Turnitin submission is through iLearn as ONE file only.)
• Submission has been prepared as one Word or PDF document. It will consist of two written parts (A and C) and one task you have completed separately online (B).
o Part A: Concepts of literacy: Discussion (500 words)
o [Not submitted in Turnitin; you do this independently and reflect on it in Part C-] Part B: Prepare yourself: Enhance your literacy skills literacy site with online literacy practice test (details below)
o Part C: Reflection (300 words) which identifies which part of the site you used.
• All parts of assignment are clearly labelled and all pages are numbered.
Part A: Concepts of Literacy
To be a literate person in contemporary society requires an increasingly wide range of competencies to make meaning in a variety of changing contexts.
Discuss this statement by considering literate practices in contemporary society. Provide reasons for your views with examples in your discussion.
Your response must be supported by reference to the textbook (Emmitt et al) and 2 other relevant reference/s.
Part B: Applying your literacy skills
In this part of the assessment task, you need to access the DES101: "Prepare yourself: Enhancing your literacy skills" site through the link on your iLearn.
You will find this listed under FULL YEAR 2020. This site has been developed by Dr O'Sullivan and Dr Barr to help students consider and evaluate their literacy skills, and to provide some practice tests based on different text types to assist them in preparing for the Literacy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students administered by ACER.
You will need to:
1. Access the site and watch the three video clips that outline how to use thesite, the importance of personal and professional literacy skills for educators, and information about the practice tests.
2. Select at least one full section with a practice test and complete it/them. Make sure that you state clearly which specific section/ practice test/s you did, as a specific reference in Part C.
Part C: Reflection (300 words)
In this Part you will now reflect on your own literacy skills, using understandings generated by the "DES101: Prepare yourself: Enhancing your literacy skills" site, your test performance in the specific section/ practice test/s undertaken as well as more general reflections on your literacy skills at this stage of their ongoing development.
Answer the following:
• State which section you completed.
• What do you feel are your particular strengths; the specific areas of literacy in which you are most confident?
• What particular areas do you consider you need to focus on? What are specific areas for improvement? How might you go about this - give specific examples.
