Instructions

In the next 4 reports you are required to reflect on and record your critical observations and thoughts on the experience of working with your host employer and in the hospitality industry in general (reflective practice). You should reflect on workplace activities weekly; more often if you prefer. In addition, each of the reports has a focus. Report 2 requires you to identify, reflect on and analyse the Mission, Vision and Values of your organisation.

Organisation - Pullman on the Park Hotel in Melbourne CBD in Food and Beverage In-room Dining and MiniBar

Task and Presentation

Report 2 should be based on the following structure (or similar):

• Cover/Title Page

• Executive Summary - concise summary of main findings

• Table of Contents

• Introduction - Background to the Report and how you're going to address the assessment task (methodology) i.e. what you did and how you did it. A literature review can also be another useful section following the Introduction. This should relate to themes relevant to the assessment task (such as Mission, Vision and Values).

• Body: Make a connection between your observations and experience and the skills and knowledge gained in previous study in the MIHM. Aim to compare theory and practice and reflect on this.

o Part 1) Reflective Practice - Key work related activities; people consulted in relation to your placement (internal and external); reflection on your placement; goals and activities undertaken since last report - what have you found out about the department/organisation and about yourself? Use Quinn et al (2007) Competing Values Approach to identify your managerial skills. Which of these competences do you intend to develop further during the coming months and how do you intend to do that?
– For example, what competences would you need for operational and management activities? Or interpersonal or communication skills etc.?
– Ensure you are critical in your analysis of the above and include any challenges faced and how they've been addressed.
– Future plans of activity.
o Part 2) Identify, reflect on and critically analyse the Mission, Vision and Values of your organisation. How is the mission and strategy of the organisation relayed to you, and how do management ensure that it is carried out? If not why not?
• Conclusion - Summary of the most significant information/results/findings. You should not include any new material in this section. Sometimes you could indicate some areas where your research has limits or barriers or where further research would be useful.
• Recommendations - Suggestions for what needs to be done as a result of your findings. Recommendations are usually listed in order of priority and could include an action plan.
• References - Harvard style in alphabetical order.
• Appendices - information that is not essential to explain your findings, but that supports your analysis (especially repetitive or lengthy information), validates your conclusions or pursues a related point

Assessment Criteria

1. Relevance of the content to the task

2. Application of theory from MIHM to industry situations and applications

3. Constructive critical analysis, observation and reflection

4. Clear and effective communication - written, verbal and visual

5. Business style reporting - legible, audible, articulate, engaging and well presented, adhering to guidelines and checked for spelling, punctuation and grammar.

6. Acknowledgement of all sources of information and other materials, appropriately referenced

7. Insight, philosophical implications and originality

8. Evidence of independent research of the topic

About Reflective Practice
Reflecting on activities in your workplace should not take a lot of time, but is best done regularly. Daily or weekly reflections are strongly recommended. Reflective Practice means thinking about your practice, consciously analysing your decision making, and then drawing on theory and relating it to what you do in practice. For example, you could record and reflect upon workplace experiences and identify your skills and personal attributes as well as any learning opportunities. Reflect on your previous studies in relation to your current experiences and consider how the theories and ideas you studied compare to the ‘real world' experience. Note how relevant or useful those theories and ideas are. If there is a difference in what you observe and experience in the workplace compared to your expectations, discuss why you think this may be occurring. Record your thoughts on things that went well and things that did not go well. Include how you are feeling about situations in your workplace and reflect on how those feelings change over time and what contributed to the change (or lack of change). The main points and themes should be summarised and critically analysed in your report.
Other areas for reflective practice could include:

• How you have reached the learning goals you mentioned in your pre placement report and identifying your learning goals for your next report. Describe the action that you will take to ensure that you will reach these learning goals

• Identifying what you still have to learn in order to function well in the department where you are working now and recognising who can help you to learn the required skills. Working out what action/s you will take to ensure that you learn the skills that you lack

• Using Quinn et al (2007) Competing Values Approach to examine your managerial leadership skill development
