Part 1 question :

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope revolutionized the sci-fi genre and popular culture. Discuss the innovative elements that made it a cultural phenomenon, such as its unique blend of science fiction, fantasy, and myth, its iconic characters and themes, its impact on the film industry, and its enduring popularity over four decades. How has the film influenced other works of pop culture and what makes it still relevant and appealing to audiences today?

Part 2 question :

While Saturday Night Fever was a box office hit, the popularity and cultural influence of its soundtrack so far outstripped that of the film, that the movie itself is sometimes forgotten. However, one could still see the film as both part of the earlier era of American Film - the New Hollywood of the late 1960s and early 1970s, as well as having elements of the blockbuster paradigm which began with Jaws. Discuss the film in those terms: As a Blockbuster, how did the film and its music help define and popularize disco music, fashion, and dance? As a film in the tradition of the more intimate and radical New Hollywood movies, how did it reflect and comment on the social and cultural changes of the late 1970s? What is the lasting impact and influence of Saturday Night Fever?

Part 3 question :

The Towering Inferno was an incredibly successfully movie that is not as well remembered as some of the other box office winners of the day. Perhaps that has to do with just how much the film is a product of the 1970s Disaster Movie boom. Those films had great special effects and complicated story lines that didn't seem to have much social content, but, upon reflection are quite revealing when it comes to ideology and values. In your estimation, what does the message of the film seem to be? What's the moral or ideological dimension of the movie? How is it reflective of the 1970s? How might it be interpreted in the terms established by any of the other movies we have 'discussed' so far this semester?
