Urban music is also referred to as urban pop or just simply urban. It is a type of music that is in the form of radio. DJ Frankie Crocker was a New York radio deejay that coined the term in the 1970s. The main playlist in the urban contemporary radio stations was made up of R&B, pop-rap, British R&B, quiet storm, hip hop, and Latin music. The urban contemporary was developed through characteristics of genres such as R&B and soul. For instance, in the United States, all the radio stations that played the urban contemporary were located in cities that have sizeable African-American populations such as New York and Washington DC. Also, urban contemporary is popular in France and United Kingdom (Dale, 2017).

This genre of music is associated with African-American music that is R&B. however, in Latin America, it is known as Latin urban due to the influence of Latinas. This also applies to reggaeton and Latin hip hop. The theme of big ideas is its evolution during the years after being formed by DJ Frankie Crocker. Students should also understand the history of urban music and how it came about. Moreover, the impact of urban music on different generations since it was formed (Dale, 2017).

The main question of this theme is why was is called urban music, the impact it has on the generation, what more can be done to the genre to accommodate more people and increase the audience, and why does it differ depending on the cultural group and the geographical location. The sub-questions include the pioneers of urban music and why they started it, why is it called Durban despite being formed in the 1970s, the importance of this type of music, and why is it associated with the African-American community. Urban music has subject areas that are helpful to music students. For instance, how to produce this type of genre, the marketing strategies that are used, understanding the genre by visiting the music museums, and having an urban artist to help teach the dynamics of urban music.

The rationale of urban music is that most people don't understand its origin and why it is associated with African-Americans. It is a type of music that is evolving with every generation hence there are new production ways that are coming with each generation. Urban music has evolved over the years and has captured different audiences over the years. As stated earlier urban music is referred differently in different geographical areas in the United States. It is important for students to understand the origin and history of urban music especially the students taking a music class. This will ensure that the roots of urban music are considered in every generation to come as well as keep the originality of the genre. Additionally, the main rationale for urban music is to help students who want to pursue this direction in their careers.
The theme of urban music has met the criteria of the theme study. For instance, students need to understand concepts and have the ability to discuss them. It is important for students to pick themes that affect the human population. It also, emphasizes on pinpointing, examining, recording patterns or meaning within data. Themes are very important in understanding a phenomenon and how they are associated with a specific research question or it is a summary of information related to a particular topic or data domain. The urban music theme is very important to society and it greatly affects them depending on the generation. It has helped in understanding the history of this genre of music.

The main role that should be played is the teacher as a director in order to develop this theme. This is because it will give the students a better understanding of the discipline and students will be able to apply what they have learned effectively. For instance, urban music will be helpful when producing this genre of music hence the teacher should be the director. Also, most people don't understand this genre of music.

This theme is very important to students especially the music students and it will help them in developing their careers and having a better understanding of the genre.

Music, History are natural links, can you incorporate Language Arts, Math, or Science somehow? Also for each subject area you are to create artifacts, materials, speakers, field trips etc.
