Case A Reducing Infant Mortality

The goal of the proposed intervention is to reduce maternal morbidity for at-risk women living in East Harlem. A capstone student who works in a maternity center believes that women in this community are at higher risk for poor pregnancy outcomes due to social factors. They have observed that patients who are referred for supportive and perinatal services later in their pregnancies are at increased risk for maternal mortality. To demonstrate this problem exists the student has collected data on maternity outcomes at the facility. The student presents data that shows that women whose primary language is not English are referred for advanced perinatal care, on average, three weeks later in their pregnancy than women whose primary language is English. The intervention the student is proposing provides a questionnaire for all pregnant patients in their primary language. The purpose of the intervention is to improve communication between patients and their obstetricians. The student believes that this intervention will improve patient screening and facilitate access to advanced perinatal care earlier in the pregnancy and thereby, reduce maternal morbidity for at-risk women living in East Harlem.
