Question
Harry and Imogine are discussing options for purchasing planes with reduced fuel consumption and pollutant emissions, which comes with potentially massive costs if a poor choice is made. Over his 40 years with the company, Harry had produced reports on this subject on several occasions, but cannot locate them. This is a sign that GDD's Organizational Memory is not well cared for. "The role of an organizational memory is to preserve valuable knowledge for future access and reuse, for example, from employees who leave the organization to new hires who join the organization. OM is thus "the means by which organizational knowledge is transferred from the past to the present."" (Stein and Zwass, 1995, as cited by Dalkir, 2011). While this individual case could be expensive in itself, there are likely many cases like this leading to thousands of hours of rework costing GDD potentially millions of dollars each year, "One IDC estimate [...] found that 90 percent of a company's accessible information is used only once" and that " an organization with one thousand knowledge workers loses a minimum of $6 million per year in time spent just searching for information. The cost of reworking information because it has not been found costs that organization a further $12 million a year." (Feldman, 2004, as cited by Dalkir, 2011). One solution to address these concerns is by implementing a CMS as mentioned in Dawn's case study.
