You have a 50 L fish tank closed to the atmosphere containing 40 L water in your office. As it was dirty so you used 10 mg of the chlorinated solvent tetrachloroethene to clean the glass (i.e., bad idea). You have 15 fish in the tank, each weighing 10 g.

How much activated carbon would you need to add to the tank to reduce tetrachloroethene concentration below the drinking water limit (i.e., 5 mg/L)? You are told that the slope of the sorption isotherm for tetrachloroethene on activated carbon in water is 0.5 (mg/g)/(μg/l). The Henry's Law constant for tetrachloroethene is 1.8 x 103 Pa-m3/mol and the bioconcentration factor is 50 g/g / g/mL.
