On Monday, November 26, 2018, General Motors announced that it was closing the Oshawa Assembly Plant (CBC, 2018). This closure has a significant impact on the 2,973 employees who will lose their jobs, the City of Oshawa, the Province of Ontario, parts suppliers and Unifor, the union representing the employees (CBC, 2018).

Jerry Dias, the president of Unifor, stated that Unifor "does not accept the closure of the plant as a foregone conclusion" (Unifor, 2018). It is not clear that Unifor has the power to force GM to keep the plant open.

The closure will have a "ripple" effect throughout the automotive sector, which may impact as many as 15% of auto industry jobs (Global News, 2018).

Politically, blame has been cast on the current government (Global News, 2018), the new USMCA agreement (CBC, 2018)and on corporate greed (CBC, 2018). Some politicians have a different take, noting that GM's stated intention of moving to all electric vehicles is in line with the need to reduce global carbon emissions (May, 2018).

  1. Who are the stakeholders?
  2. Classify them and why?
  3. Comments about the issue and feelings about it?
