Erica Watson is receiving one unit of red cells on day two following a severe postpartum haemorrhage. When taking her vital signs one hour into the transfusion, you notice that her temperature has increased from a baseline of 37.1 °C to 38.2 °C. What is the correct response? Stop the transfusion, maintain IV access, complete an assessment of the patient, repeat the identification check and ask for a medical review As a moderately elevated temperature is normal following child birth it is safe to continue as transfusion Decrease the rate of the transfusion and reassess in 30 minutes to determine if her temperature has gone down Stop the transfusion discard the unit and commence transfusion of a new unit of blood.
