EXPERIMENT #1:
Recrystallization of Acetanilide
INTRODUCTION
The purification of a solid is achieved through recrystallization. In this process, the mixture that contains the compound of interest is dissolved in the minimum amount of hot solvent. An Erlenmeyer flask is particularly well adapted for this, because it can be held at its neck using a clamp while it is heated in a bath and solvent loss by evaporation is minimized. Beakers should never be used for recrystallization because rapid evaporation of solvent means that the recrystallization process happens to quickly which can result in the inclusion of impurities within the crystallized product.
