Case Study
Jamaica Grill is a Jamaica-based fast-food chain that was established in 1991 at its headquarters location in Cross Road, St. Andrew; and now has 16 stores in Jamaica and one at Miami International Airport, USA. Jamaica Grill prepares authentic Jamaican jerk and grill meals, vegetarian meals, and natural beverages.
Mr. Ontwain Farquharson, founder, and CEO of Jamaica Grill, in a recent interview with The Business News, indicated that Jamaica Grill will be expanding by adding five new locations in Jamaica by the end of 2023.
The fast-food chain is currently targeting 100 new employees, including for positions to be created for the new locations. The 100 vacancies presently in Jamaica Grill are mainly for team members and shift supervisors. Mr. Farquharson asserts that the company's internal promotion policy is attractive, a factor to be considered in an ongoing discussion of competition faced by the fast-food sector from business process outsourcing entities for entry-level workers. There are plans to source the shift supervisors internally and the team members externally. He adds that of this figure, the company "needs approximately 50 new team members" for its May Pen store which is to open in December 2022.
Jamaica Grill is also planning to open two other store locations for the first quarter of 2023. These locations were not disclosed. Jamaica Grill's newest store is on 10 Milky Way, Kingston. It was opened during the midst of the novel coronavirus pandemic "because it was so far advanced we couldn't stop", Farquharson told The Business News. The Milky Way location was opened in April 2020.
Farquharson told The Business News that Jamaica Grill is a place where employees are able to grow and develop themselves. There are plans to train the new employees and evaluate their performance after one year but Jamaica Grill does not have the competencies to conduct the training and performance evaluation program at this time. Mr. Farquharson will be requesting the services of HR Consultants to assist him.
