The authors discuss how the concept that addiction is a life experience comparable to one's occupation may explain an individual's resistance to behavioral change during recovery. The treatment process will only have a chance to affect the existential meaning of an individual's behavior if the importance of that person's core identity and the nature of that person's social connections are understood.
