Review the following scenario:

You are the Manager of Human Resources and Occupational Health & Safety at the "Central Perk." located at 199 Lafayette Street in North York, Ontario. Central Perk is a trendy coffee house that roasts and grinds their own beans and has a full-service restaurant. During an inspection you notice that workers use very hazardous cleaning chemicals, and that there is no WHMIS training nor is there any training at all on safe chemical storage, handling, and use.  There was a very serious chemical related accident to a new worker named Racheal Green the previous week and her friends who hang out here are very upset.  You need to implement some training as soon as possible.

(HINT - You may have to utilize our Hazards, Risks, and Control learning from Chapter #4 for this assignment.)

Step 1: Routes of Entry

  • It is important for the workers to know that chemicals may enter the body through four routes of entry.
    • Name them
    • Describe them in detail
    • Give an example of each as it may apply to the workplace in the scenario.

Step 2: WHMIS

  • After the information on the routes of entry you need to get into the WHMIS training.  After speaking with workers, they don't even know what WHMIS stands for.  You need to make sure that the training includes the following information:
    • What does WHMIS stand for?
    • List and describe in DETAIL the three central elements of a WHMIS program and apply it to the workplace in the scenario. (Some resources will identify "Product Classification" or "Hazard Classes and Categories" as an element, please ignore this one.)
    • Be sure to utilize the Guide to the WHMIS Legislation. Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS): A Guide to the Legislation, Publications Ontario
    • Be sure to utilize the most current WHMIS2015 legislation.
    • Reminder: This section is worth 40 marks.

Step 3: Safety Data Sheet

  • You want to make sure that workers know how to read a Safety Data Sheet as it may save their life or the life of a co-worker one day. You develop this quiz for the workers but now need to review the attached Safety Data Sheet and find the answers to the following questions:
