Societies have evolved into highly mobile communities and to meet the needs of this mobile populace, the demands for mobile computing have grown in the last decade. Because of our needs to work, communicate and exchange data and information, mobile devices like laptops, cell phones, tablets, Blackberries and PDAs have evolved to meet our demands as a mobile community.
Several factors are responsible for this technological leap. The first is the advancement of electronic technologies which have drastically miniaturized what used to be bulky computing devices. Along with this miniaturization is the growth of the computing power of these devices. It has often been said that the processing power of the average cell phones these days is greater than the computing power of the Apollo spacecraft that took man to the moon.
Although it is true that the physical sizes of these devices have been scaled down, miniaturization also happened to the components inside these devices along with the huge increase in their processing power. The Intel class of processors for example has witnessed a huge leap in the number of processing units per chip. It started from the intel 286 processor in the eighties to its latest intel i9 processor which has more than 8 cores in one chip. Apart from the CPU chip and its speed, the size and speed of the memory has also witnessed a giant leap, just as the speed and size of the hard disk storage in these mobile devices.
The immediate effect of miniaturization is the drop in prices of these mobile devices which made them more accessible to the populace. But mobile computing would not have been possible without network coverage. This domain too has also witnessed great advancement. Companies and government are now switching to the 5G network to accommodate society's demands for speed, robotics technologies, automomous vehicles and remote surgeries using robots etc. Mobile networks started with 2G then moved to 3G then 4G and now 5G network.
Mobile devices are computing platforms and it will be incomplete to have a discussion on their evolution without a mention of the operating systems that run them. Google's Android, Apple's iOS and Microsoft's Window's Mobile have been at the forefront of the evolution of mobile operating system platforms.
