For BLS II patients that undergo successful hematopoietic stem cell transplant no longer have the severe combined immunodeficiency phenotype, and have the antibody responses by B cells improves considerably. However, their total CD4 T cell counts are only about 20% of normal.

These patients do not have a thymus transplant when they receive the hematopoietic stem cell transplant. How would you explain the partial restoration of their CD4 T cells? Why don't they have 100% of the normal CD4 T cell count?
