Question: A very well presented article on the history of the garage and how it came to be. A garage was originally used to house a leisure toy called the car that could not be placed in the stables because the paint would come off. It was placed at the back of the property. As more people obtained a car and it became less of a toy and more a tool the garage became more common.
Placed at the back of the property still but unlike the toy era of the car the garage was usually just big enough to house the car. After World War II it became common for the garage to be attached to the house. The garage then became a two car garage which could house another car and/or include a dryer, washer, deep freezer, garden houses, and many other things. The garage is just another way in which changing technologies changed the house.
As technologies change, people will change the landscape to better utilize the new technology. Automobile allowed for the suburbs and the garage came to the front of the house for ease of convenience in and out of the house. Household appliances increased and a place such as a garage was a great place to store them. In all of our intellectual thinking let us not forget the practical reasons why a landscape will change.
