GLT3001 English Language Proficiency - Gulf College
Aims
1. To raise English to level B2/C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference.
2. To improve students' skills and competence in listening to, reading, writing, and speaking English.
3. To further students' awareness of grammatical structures of English.
4. To continue to expand students' vocabulary in English.
Learning Outcome 1: Evidence their skills and knowledge of the English Language to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference
Learning Outcome 2: Use vocabulary and grammatical constructions which are reflected at level B2 of the Common European Framework.
Learning Outcome 3: Identify and organise information that they have received aurally in a variety of contexts including discussions, interviews, podcasts and lectures;
Learning Outcome 4: Use written English to produce essays, describe trends, evaluate information and summarise whilst avoiding plagiarism;
Learning Outcome 5: Actively and meaningfully take part in debates, discussions and conversations
Learning Outcome 6: Orally present information;
Learning Outcome 7: Apply the above skills to real life situations through case studies and role-plays etc.
Assessment Details
This Writ1 -Note taking comprises 50% of the total assessments marks. It contains three components listening, taking notes and writing. The students will develop the concept of remembering facts and salient information by aurally receiving and note-taking information. Furthermore, their higher thinking skills will be enhanced especially when they analyse the salient information they heard which they will assess to note its level of importance.
In addition, the assessment will test the following learning outcomes:
1. Evidence their skills and knowledge of the English Language to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference
2. Use vocabulary and grammatical constructions which are reflected at level B2 of the Common European Framework.
3. Identify and organise information that they have received aurally in a variety of contexts including discussions, interviews, podcasts and lectures;
Assessment Task
1. Listen to a 5-10 minute podcast which will be in a form of either lecture, interview or discussion given by the module tutor;
2. Note down the important data and later organise them into information in a shape of a paragraph.
3. A minimum of 1,200 words should be written in your text;
4. Write down all the information gathered and use one of the note-taking methods to summarise your points; this may include diagrams, graphs, sentences or illustrations;
5. Submit online this information on the date specified by your module tutor.
