Question: Christina Rossetti's work "Goblin Market" is often marketed as a children's poem. In fact, the Victorian period was the Golden Age of Children's Literature in British literature. Publishers were recognizing children as a consumers and began publishing materials that appealed to their minds. No longer were they miniature adults, but rather children were seen as having their own separate stage in human development. Perhaps the most well-known author to capture the concept of how a child's mind works differently is Lewis Carroll. For this journal assignment, I want you to read "Chapter 6" of Through the Looking Glass, Lewis Carroll's second book about Alice (of Alice in Wonderland fame), a little girl who ventures into imaginary realms. However, Carroll deviates from the traditional fairy tale and has Alice's adventures occur in her dreams about imaginary realms. In Through the Looking Glass, Alice falls asleep in an armchair by the fire and dreams about going through the mirror above the mantle to a world in which everything is reversed. She first comes across a book with the poem "The Jabberwocky" but cannot make sense of it. In "Chapter 6," in meeting Humpty Dumpty, a child in his own right, Alice is educated on the meaning of the poem.
Critically read this chapter looking at the concept of the real child versus the Victorian social norms for an ideal child. Define the mindset of the Victorian child based on this discussion in "Chapter 6." You may also bring in characteristics you can deduce from "Goblin Market" since Lizzie and Laura are supposed to be child-like and do introduce what they want for their own children at the end of the poem. Formulate your answer in a 300-600 word mini essay using textual evidence to support your discussion (use correct in-text citation and Works Cited documentation).
Journals are low-risk evaluations of your analytical essay writing skills. I will grade on content, organization, use of evidence from the readings, and MLA format. If grammar distracts from comprehension, then you will be deducted points for grammar. However, it will not be the focus of my grading.
