Assignment:

Reading the Salem witchcraft trial proceedings and the theoretical works about witchcraft which provide background to those trials (works by Kramer and Sprenger, King James VI/I, Joseph Glanvill, Cotton Mather, and Increase Mather) from our contemporary perspective, we find ourselves simply unable to believe that there are, or ever were, such beings as witches. Do we know something today about witches and witchcraft that people in the 17th century did not know? If so, what is it? If not, what is the basis of our current conviction that there cannot be witches? Develop your answer by discussing the controversy in the Salem trials over the use of spectral evidence.
