While Heart of Darkness criticizes imperialism, many people, including scholars, criticize its portrayal of the African people as ultimately racist. In fact, renowned professor, poet, and novelist Chinua Achebe stated in a famous lecture on the subject that "It is clearly not part of Conrad's purpose to confer language on the 'rudimentary souls' of Africa. In place of speech they made 'a violent babble of uncouth sounds.' They 'exchanged short grunting phrases' even among themselves. But most of the time they were too busy with their frenzy."
