Introduction
You all have read the "who am I" assignment where you were introduced to the three levels of identity (macro, micro, & meso). How identity is shaped at each level, what types of identity is included at each level and how important that level of identity is to society in terms of power all vary from level to level. You have had the opportunity to think about this individually, now we will discuss this as a class.
As you see from the reading, race and ethnicity are macro identities and therefore, we will focus our discussion on this level since its the focus of our class. One thing I want to be clear on is we are going to engage in supportive learning process.
As part of this step please answer the following two questions. In order to successfully address these questions you need to have read the "who am I?" reading on the previous activity and the video above:
- Explain how macro identities are utilized in designing the system. Make sure to start out by stating what the purpose of a system is. 5 to 8 sentences. More is okay less is not.
- What stood out to you as new information/understanding that you previously didn't consider or know? Why do you find that important? 5 to 8 sentences. More is okay less is not.
Discussion Guidelines
Don't simply say "I agree" or "I like". If you agree, build on what they have contributed by connecting other pieces of evidence that might complement their analysis. If you think their analysis is a bit off or inaccurate, help them see what you see. In other words, truly engage in a discussion.
Lets remember to always engage in constructive discussion. We are all in different places in learning process so lets support each other in that process.
You responding to a comment made regarding your own post will count as a discussion post.
Since this is also an opportunity to get to know members of our class, one of your posts can simply be you commenting a classmates social identities.
Lastly, feel free to comment more than instructed if you are engaged in a convo with someone.
