Both public and private employees should have the same protection when it comes to freedom of speech. As stated in our class reading on the Constitution, not all speech is protected by the First Amendment but "courts generally recognize political speech (and sometimes symbolic speech) as most deserving of protection." In Whitney v. California, 274 U.S. 357 (1927) Justice Louis Brandeis wrote "freedom to think as you will and to speak as you think are means indispensable to the discovery and spread of political truth." This should extend to not just where government is involved but offer protection to employees of private companies so that corporations can't stifle the exchange of all political views.
