Reading focuses on adult education policy. While much of the chapter focuses on public policy, especially with regard to basic and higher education, only some of us work in contexts governed by these kinds of policies. Even when we do, there are many policies internal to our specific worksites. As Ross-Gordon et al. (2017) observe, "policies permeate our lives" ( p. 285). Policy is everywhere and yet it is often somewhat invisible until you choose to train your view on it.

Your task is to do just that.

Select a policy in your workplace (to determine what is a policy, please refer to definitions in the text). Alternatively, you could focus on a context where you do volunteer work or where you are an adult learner.

Describe the policy then for your analysis.

Consider:

  • How decisions were made to develop the policy;
  • What problem the policy is designed to address;
  • What gaps there are between intent (policy as writing) and implementation (where the rubber meets the road);
  • And how the effectiveness of the policy is (or should or could be) evaluated.
  • You might also consider how the policy perpetuates or addresses systemic racism.
  • You need not touch on all of these, but the more you can, the better.
  • Finally, state how this analysis impacts you, as is, or in terms of actions you would consider taking to address tensions, gaps, and inconsistencies in the future.
