You'll be reading a translation of Aristophanes' "The Clouds." Aristophanes (446BCE-386BCE) was a comic playwright and wrote nearly 40 different works of Old Comedy that were popular and well received in Athenian society.

"The Clouds" is important for our module this week because it provides an alternate view of Socrates. Most accounts of Socrates come from his student Plato, thus we usually see Socrates in a serious and sophisticated way. While you are annotating "The Clouds" pay attention to how Socrates differs in this work from what you read in the text book, or what you may know from Socrates.

Plato, after the death of Socrates, was greatly influenced by this work of Aristophanes and even accuses him of being the spark that brough about the execution of Socrates by the city of Athens.
