Assignment:
Portfolio on the Life and Teachings of Jesus
The student will assemble a portfolio that demonstrates the relevance of the life and teachings of Jesus to contemporary life. Designed to assess the second competency stipulated in the University's general education student learning outcomes, the portfolio will contain the following sections:
Section I. Current Issues. Read chapter 2 "Beatitudes" from Thoughts from The Mount of Blessing by Ellen G. White. In this section, the student will highlight one contemporary issue from politics, world events and/or contemporary culture and use appropriate Bible passages from the gospels and from the read to comment on what Jesus would have to say about them. Your paper for this section will highlight:
1. The contemporary issue be it politics, world events and/or contemporary culture (ie. social justice, institutional/social racism etc., brutality towards minorities etc.) mingled with passages of scripture and of the reading from Ellen White.
2. You will cite the issue with something in a current journal, article, website etc. which covers this topic.
3. In order to receive credit for this section, I must see all of the directions followed. Surface work will be severely penalized.
Section II. Moral Decision Making . Read Matthew chapter 5 and 6 and then chapter 3, "The Spirituality of the Law" from Thoughts From The Mount of Blessing by Ellen G. White. In this section the student will
1. Look carefully at Jesus' teachings in the Sermon on the Mount, paying special attention to the what Christ is saying based on the readings.
2. The student will briefly discuss three of Jesus' teachings that directly address decisions they make on a regular basis.
3. Surface work will be severely penalized.
Note: For the final submission:
1. Each section will have its own header and consist of between seven to ten paragraphs:
a. The first paragraph will summarize the items in each section that will form the basis for the commentary.
b. Each of the other paragraphs will apply the lessons or principles derived from the student's careful investigation of the life and teachings of Jesus.
