Assignment:
You teach a 4th grade class. Your observations tell you that there are a variety of reading skills in terms of fluency (e.g. accuracy, pronunciation, rhythm, speed, intonation, punctuation) and comprehension. Some students are effective readers and others have certain difficulties.
Here are more precisely the reading profiles of your class:
? There are 22 students in your class - 9 girls and 13 boys.
? In terms of fluency, students can generally be classified into one of 3 categories: high (4), appropriate (13) and struggling (5).
o Maya, Johanna, Paul, Luke and Steve have difficulty with fluency.
? Maya and Steve have different needs from the other 3. They still read word by word and seem to take too long to decode. This affects the pace of reading.
? Johanna, Paul and Luke are reading too quickly. Often they don't read word endings and/or guess words. There is a lack of precision.
? The other 17 students are progressing normally in terms of fluency, but you are worried about the reading comprehension of 4 students (Sabrina, Jennifer, Samuel and Scott). They read fluently, but seem to have difficulty understanding their reading.
1. You know the components of teaching reading: phonetics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Which ones will you target for different students in the class?
2. You know best practices for reading: modeled reading, guided reading, shared reading, collaborative reading, word/sound study, and independent reading. Which ones will you use for different students in the class?
3. You also understand that the purpose of reading is always understanding. How are you going to make sure you work on understanding and fluency?
