Assignment:

Read both texts of David Delaney on the relation between nature/ law and law/ science. They are both an excellent introduction to some key questions we will attempt to answer in the rest of course. If you have time please also read Sheila Jasanof's excellent article on "making order" (on the relation between science & society).

Please answer the following question.

1) Delaney in his chapter 'The Nature of Science Discourse' speaks of the "politics of nature" and the so-called "science wars". What does he mean, how are the two terms related and what is according to him the actual consequence of this "politics of nature"?

2) In 'The Nature of Legal Discourse' Delaney points to the foundational duality between our understanding of physis and nomos, or "nature" and "law". The consequence of this relation is that law and nature "always limit each other" - while the "location" of this limit might change, the function of law as 'liminal' - as tool to draw boundaries -, does not. What is, according to Delaney, the importance of this "liminal" relation between law and nature for our understanding of the law/ legal thinking?

3) While for Delany law/nature/ science creates a "liminal" space, Jasanof speaks of the "co-production" of science & law. What is the main difference between the two concepts?
