History is written by people, and by that I mean that anyone who recounts the events of the past is informed by their own experience and training.

Responsible historians work very hard to control their bias, and present a story as close to "what actually happened" as possible. Despite that, no author is completely capable of limiting their bias.

The textbook for this class, by Robert Remini, is a good example of this. Remini is a very skilled and respected historian, but there are people and events that he interprets very differently because of his background.

He is an expert on Andrew Jackson, having written several books on the subject. He has a great respect for Jackson. I have read widely and deeply on Native American history, so I have a hard time seeing Jackson as anything but a weasel.

The study of history requires scholars to be aware of thier own bias and that of their sources, which requires you to look beyond what the printed word says to the motivation behind using those words. The ability to identify bias is not only a valuable skill for historians, it is valuable every time you read or listen to the news, have conversations with people, prepare to vote, or numerous other situations.

Your assignment is to read the introduction to the Remini book. As you read, ask yourself what clues does the author give to his political bias.

Remember to follow the guidelines in the "course information" tab in "writing directions." You need a thesis statement, supporting sentences, and a conclusion. Your response must be at least 200 words in length.
