Read the chapter by Wilfredo Cruz, "Guatemalans and Salvadorans" from his book City of Dreams: Latino Immigration to Chicago. Please also read the articles on Guatemalans and Salvadorans and the other Central American groups from Encyclopedia Chicago and answer the following questions.
1. What was the impetus for Guatemalan and Central American immigration to Chicago? That is, what factors help explain why they immigrated to the United States and specifically Chicago? Be sure to comment not only on individual or family reasons for immigrating, but on larger political and economic forces at work that led to their immigrating to the United States.
2. How do the experiences of Guatemalans, Salvadorians and other Central Americans compare to those of Mexican and Puerto Rican immigrants/migrants to Chicago? For example, what did you learn about the settlement experience of Central Americans in Chicago? That is, in what parts of the city did they settle? How did the settlement experiences vary from those of Puerto Ricans and Mexican immigrants to Chicago? Where did they find employment?
3. Watch the video Guatemala: In the Shadow of the Raid. Also read the editor's note that accompanies this video documentary. What new immigration issue did you learn about from this video and the editor's note? That is, what additional dimensions of immigration did you learn about from this video?
